AURORA VIEWING/NORTHERN SAMPLER – from $1456.00 CDN -
Dates Nov. 15, 2007-Mar. 15,
2008

Imagine yourself viewing the “Northern Lights” outside on a clear dark night, just a few miles from your
comfortable hotel. Low on the horizon you notice a faint glow of greenish light which forms an arch
stretching lazily across the sky. As time passes, additional bands of light form and drift overhead,
slowly brightening to form giant curtains in the sky that wave as if a gentle breeze were blowing. The
entire sky seems to be full of colour and motion. Then, after several minutes, everything fades into a
warm green glow. No two auroras are ever alike and it takes several factors to make them happen.
Auroras work like a neon sign, except that in the aurora, the conducting gas is in the ionosphere, instead of a glass tube, and the current travels along magnetic field lines instead of copper wires. Auroras form in rings centered over the earth’s magnetic poles so Whitehorse is a prime viewing area.
After your arrival in Whitehorse you will be transferred to the Westmark Whitehorse hotel, your home
for the next three days. Aurora viewing is best late at night so you will be taken to a viewing site outside
the city to avoid contamination by street lights, etc. There are two viewing sites which may be used over
the three nights, located in open fields only twenty minutes from town. Hot drinks are available at the
sites and light snacks. You return to the hotel in the wee hours of the morning so you may not want
to do too much during the day. We have included half day ice-fishing and snow-shoeing experiences.
Snowmobiling, dog mushing, cross country skiing, or wildlife viewing may be added or substituted plus,
of course, shopping for northern souvenirs.
All too soon it will be time for you to return to your home.
NOTE: There will be no refund should there be no aurora, as this is a natural phenomenon.
